In his remarks, Engr. Unachukwu emphasized, “This is a critical step forward for Nigeria. At BMI, through our ‘Catch Them Young Initiative,’ we’ve been championing the need for functional education—restructuring the old curriculum to include tools that empower students with practical skills, self-reliance, and independence.”

During the recent meeting of the National Council on Education, the council approved a new curriculum set to be unveiled soon. According to the Minister’s statement, every child graduating from primary and secondary school will now be required to acquire two skills.

“We commend the Honourable Minister, the Ministry of Education, the research teams, and the National Council on Education for this progressive initiative, and we urge them to see it through to full implementation. We believe that the success of this curriculum lies in the active involvement of all stakeholders, including teachers and parents. It’s a crucial step to addressing the current challenges facing our youth, many of whom are left without job prospects after completing the old educational system, thereby becoming societal burdens. While the National Youth Confab, as announced by the President, aims to address today’s youth issues, this new curriculum, if well executed, will ensure that future generations won’t face these same problems. By incorporating skill acquisition and entrepreneurship into education, Nigeria will develop a strong workforce of skilled professionals, potentially exporting these talents globally, much like India, which generates billions annually from skilled labor exports. We strongly encourage the Ministry of Education to ensure this initiative doesn’t just remain an announcement but is followed through with tangible action.”

To ensure the successful implementation of this initiative, Unachukwu stressed the need for collaboration between the public and private sectors. “Education must go beyond the whiteboard and be hands-on. Corporate organizations should sponsor TV programs that focus on skill development and create healthy competitions where students can showcase their vocational and practical skills. Additionally, companies should open their doors to young students for internships, and we need increased corporate sponsorship for these initiatives. State governments and companies should also build hubs where students can practice and apply what they’ve learned. Alumni associations should invest in their former schools, helping to establish labs for practical learning. It’s time to shift education from being purely academic to hands-on, as that’s the key to a better future.”

He also called on the federal government to fully support the new curriculum when it becomes official. “We may not yet know all the details of the curriculum, but the announcement that every child will learn two skills is a game-changer for Nigeria. Our plea is that the focus should not only be on acquiring skills but also on cultivating a mindset of nation-building in students. This way, as they learn, they also grow into entrepreneurs who will drive wealth creation across the country.”

Engr. Unachukwu also expressed his appreciation for the President’s Education Transformation Agenda, which aims to thoroughly reform the sector to improve learning quality, skill development, access, and equity.
